hey, remember that summer project?

Well, I still have some photos from then that I haven't shared. Here they are! The first one was 'Religion' and the 'never felt like home' is something about america.

And this crazy doodle page is 'Hobbies'
And to refresh your memory of what they all looked like together...
(Expectations: see things differently, have an obsession, be ready to try new things, have courage, work hard and be nice to people.)
Possibly my favourite set of images I did was the 'Hopes' set. Here they are:

(this is more about finding the right thing that works for me that will make me successful- not that i want a lot of money. haha.)
(this is one is about hoping that I can cope.)

And lastly, I've neglected this 'hope' for the last term because I've been so focused on DRAWING. I think that's right. I think it was important for me to step back from trying really hard to do 'my thing' and just focus on how to draw! To be honest, learning to draw or at least learning how I draw was on the top of my list. It's probably my biggest insecurity. Everyone in our class seems to know what they are doing, they can just come up with things from their brain that looks amazing. I really struggle with this 'imagined' part of drawing. But I've noticed that after spending so much time this term focusing on specific tasks, that I've gotten (I wouldn't say 'better', maybe more in control) more comfortable with drawing from all different types of situations. It's really helped and I can see a huge difference- especially when I think back to this time last year- when I couldn't even draw a face. :]

So, I guess what I'm tring to say is that I'm excited about this new year, and hopefully incorporating my craft side into my work more obviously. I've been sneakily working on my knitting skills in the evening- but that's another post.

Hello Hello Hello.Hello, my name is Kim- nice to meet you!(Some sneaky pictures of the studio and some of my classmates.)
p.s. Hello to hoping that by the end of this course I can climb the stairs up to the studio without feeling winded.

Interesting #10

KERI SMITH
http://www.kerismith.com
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerismith/
Perhaps an obvious choice- but I appreciate how Keri Smith explores the world and see's the good in things. She takes simple things and gives them life or takes things with life and makes them simple.
Following her on flickr has allowed me to take a look at some of the series' that she makes up and produces. Particularly I like the morning collages that she did for a while- setting herself a task and keeping to it. This image is from a series of pieces that she produced on bits of plywood. Working with paper, collage, sentiment, objects, bits and pieces, noticing things, exploring, being aware.

JIM HOUSER
http://jimhouser.com/
nice interview here.
A good example of not limiting yourself to just a canvas or a piece of paper- Jim Houser often transcends the barriers that often inhibit painters and illustrators, bringing his work into 3D, across entire rooms, merging edges and even letting the message come through musically. His colour choices make me happy and that he built little plants and painted them to create this entire world.Behind all of that, the way he communicates things through very simple lines and words is interesting- even though it takes a little bit of interpretation to get the true meaning (like a lot of his work is about dealing with losing his wife but that's not obvious on first glance). I think he deals with emotions in a beautiful way.

delicate, soft shadows, over exposure, everyday life, film, collections, beauty in the small things, details, hues.
objects, frills, craft, etsy shop. such beautiful photographs.

TWINKIE CHAN
http://www.twinkiechan.com
http://www.etsy.com/shop/TwinkieChan
Pretty much an amazing and innovative use of knitting/crochet. Although I think her blog is kind of crazy and we have a lot of different interests- I have a huge amount of respect for this girl and the brand/business she's created.

She is super true to herself and kind and cute and i mean- just by looking through her website or 'sold items' in her etsy you can see she's got skills with needles/hooks and wool. she designs all of the patterns herself and as far as I know makes them all herself (although it wouldn't surprise me if she's got a few extra hands helping her out). One of the things I want to do is combine art and craft together- find some kind of happy medium- bring illustration off of the page... anyway, this inspires me because her knitted pieces look like drawings and that's exciting to me.

Frànçois
http://www.kidfrancois.com/

So first of all, he is a musician. Secondly he draws (with water colours). Thirdly he makes animations with both of these talents, and finally he is incredibly involved with other creative people and lastly he is what i would call a wonderful example of an 'indie artist'. Indie meaning independent.

I don't really think I need to say anything else except that I love it and own several of his albums.

SYDNEY MILLER
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sydneymiller/
http://sydneymiller.tumblr.com/it may just be that i have a girl crush on Sydney, but I've followed her for a couple of years and she's always had interesting images floating around the internet. I like the carefree nature of all of them and how they really do feel like snapshots- often getting images that feel like stills from a film. Some of her videos are interesting too- This one is possibly my favourite:Other than the subject and feel of her photographs, they often have warm to neutral qualities about them that make them feel more accessible. She might laugh when I say this- but also I think they tell a story about growing up and finding freedom and what you might do with that new found control (or lack of).I'm interested to see what she does with her talents.

ERIN KENEPP
http://www.flickr.com/photos/edog2007/
http://erinkenepp.blogspot.comFirst of all, i'm not a huge fan of the colours. there is something a bit sickly about them- maybe if they weren't mixed or mixed with brown or something they wouldn't feel so... gross? I don't know- but beyond that, I like the sentiment and the layout and the handwriting and it reminds me so much of Sabrina Ward Harrison (I found Erin on flickr while looking for inspiration on Art Journals). Art Journals in general really interest me- a place to store confessions and secrets and spill out your heart a little bit while being creative. It's a form of therepy and I think that part of it trumps whatever colours are used. If this was my page, I would feel like it needed more- but that's why I like it, cause it's brave.

THE CRAFT MANIFESTO by KATE BINGAMAN BURT for HANDMADE NATION
http://katebingamanburt.com/
http://indiecraftdocumentary.blogspot.com/
It's not really a secret that I love typography. the more handdrawn- the better. It's also no secret that i love indie craft. I like independent artists. I like making the world a better place. I like quirky drawings. I like people making stuff from scratch. I like community. I like skills learnt and passed on. I like etsy. I like craft fairs. I like zines.
This one drawing/statement/manifesto just sums up everything that Handmation is about- it also is a very good example of Kate's work (of which I follow and love). Also those colours kill me. seriously. i die for that dirty mustard and brown. I like to think that I am part of this in a small way. I follow Faythe Levin (one of the authors) on twitter who is always tweeting about jetting off here or there, sharing the handmade nation love. I think she is working on a second book/movie. That interests me a lot.
p.s. ack! look what i found of kate's. love

ELSIE of REDVELVETART
http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com
http://www.redvelvetart.com/
I have followed Elise Flannigan for at least 4 years now, and she is always coming up with something new. As a blogger I look up to her, because she always has new photographs and new things to share and presents them in a clear, beautiful and interesting way. She is a trend setter and has a kind heart. As a business woman I look up to her because she has gone out there and made her life all about making things- she's successful at it and an inspiration to a lot of people.
As an artist, I look up to her because she stays true to who she is, she says she's always learning, she's not afraid to try new things and change how she goes about sharing her talents with the world (i.e. she was a scrapbooker and designer, then she went freelance, ran an etsy shop, opened a handmade store and now she is opening her second store which is a hybrid of handmade, vintage and cupcakes). I chose these photographs from her blog because they are recent and give a nice idea of what she blogs about- I didn't want to include much of her illustrations/designs because interesting thing number 1 is her, not her work (although her work is amazing too).

That Pesky Summer Project.

Ok, kidding. I love it really. Because we all know I'm a nerd.
But I just re-read the sheet of paper and I thought we needed to bring 3 examples of art/design/illustration from the place we call home.
no. it's 3 examples of art, 3 examples of design and 3 examples of illustration (+ the 10 interesting things I need to post here)
which really isn't that hard
BUT it would be so much easier if i thought america was my home.
i could give you 10000000000 examples right now if that was the case.
maybe i'll go to the library this week?
or just write out a list.
or something.

some of my 'getting to know you' drawings are nearly ready to be posted. going to photograph them right now actually.
oh, and i'm adding some links to the top- as categories. still trying to decide the best way to organize this. tell me if you find it confusing.
