Fact + Fiction. Studio. Exhibition,

I was going to post this on artequalshappy but it got wordy and long. putting it here as a document.

Hello! It's been assessment time around the Camberwell Illustration department. 1st years had thiers, we just finished ours and the 3rd years were looking pretty stressed today labeling all thier work. It's customary for the 2nd years to put on a little show around this time, celebrating the work we've all be doing over the last Unit.

We've done three main projects called, Fact, Fiction and Publish where our main goal has been to really progress in our personal development. As you can probably guess, one of the projects is based on something factual, and another something fictional and the third is all about ways and means of publishing the work. Basicaly. Kind of.

There is a huge range of work up- and it was definately a challenge organising and sorting all the work so that the exhibition flows nicely. We put together a nice (small!) team of self-motiviated individuals to sort out the hanging on the show, and I've been heavily involved in it (obviously not standing on ladders. I'm dreadful with balance these days). The kind of opportunity to get together and be incredibly pedantic about placement and spacing is pretty rare & although you can't always please everyone- I think we did a great job for our first crack at it.

It's so good to have done this because that means that we will be just that much more prepared for our Final Show this year AND our 3rd Year Show! I can see good things ahead, people!!!
It's also been amazing to see my knitted pieces up alongside all the drawings and paintings and prints. Kind of put tears in my eyes. Ok. Maybe it didn't. But because I was trying to be cool. Actually- I'm not cool. The point is: This year has been a really rocky road for me and my work. After all of foundation and 1st year being 'beaten down', it finally started to rise up and grow again! I'm feeling like my work can stand up next to the rest- but that it's also different enough to be mine- and that it's come a long way. Obviously there is still way more to learn- the road is l o n g. But this is a good check-point. So, I guess I'm just checking in to say that the show looks amazing and EVERYONE has put in tons of hard work, and the quality/talent is amazing. Gosh, guys- I'm just so proud!

Costume in Progress! :: Author Project

This last week has been great- the Workshops with Rita and Marie have been incredibly helpful and illuminating! These are a few shots from Friday, of my costume in progress. Made a basic hood (first time ever!)And did more sewing on my body suit. These bottom photos are what I had finished when we all did our little 'presentations' to Joceline Howe at the end of the day.
"My creature can't move- it's immobilized by the restrictive sack of skin it lives in and tends to like to sit or ly down in it's environment. While it's there it can do some crafts (**this got quite a few laughs, as I took out my knitting dramatically from inside the sack**), to keep itself busy. It keeps a small supply of yarn and things inside it's skin, and can take it out to work on it when it feels like it. When an object is complete, it can attach the object to the sack to make it's home more like a nest. Overtime, it will become more comfortable and more 'nested' in." That's basically what I said, along with my primary needs being: Crafts as 'magic' or therapy (That's how it feeds or nurtures itself.), Comfort (building the next), Honesty (and humility, and trust- all handmade), Colour (the materials) and Senses (arm holes, a hood for seeing).

Here is a little photo of my workspace from friday. (Big ass thermos full of tea- much needed!)

Camberwell Christmas.

I did a post a little while ago about our Camberwell Christmas over on my ArtEqualsHappy blog, because it's not really 'work'. But, it was camberwell and it was fun and we drew and made stuff. so check it outttt.

That poster- I drew the 'Ho Ho Ho' (which i meant to be holly jolly christmas, but realized that it wouldn't fit.) and the each of the tutors(geoff, rob and jim) added their contribution. lovely, I think.

Also I made some tasty treats for the occasion.

And this last one was taken off of facebook. [: I am rather fond of it.

three horned witch

Another workshop we did was to help with characterization. My group picked the Three Horned Witch from our story (in the cabaret project) to draw objects, places, people, rooms, shapes, and a couple of other things. then we pooled our ideas and made a 'sentence' that said something about the witch.(i especially loved this zooming that happened by accident- something we are thinking of adding into the real thing!)

Again, it was loose and fun and quick and mainly to get us thinking. :]

HEY there.

In the studio we did some workshops which were supposed to loosen us up and get us working in groups. I really enjoyed working with different people and not bothering about it being 'good'. I really tried to relax with it and have fun. (i did the head with the beard. ha!)We did a fun exercise where we wrote a story as a group:
and then story boarded it:

and then passed it to another group, who had to interpret it and draw it. and then pass that story around and... you get the idea. here is the original story from another group which we did a story board for right at the end...

I love how different it is! (mine is the little orange cat monster and the blue guy with a knife). silly and quick but fun! I honestly think we had the best story, to be honest. Who can really beat an exiled star who turns evil (complete with mustache) and kills a mountain man and then there are super moles.... I mean, come on!

Tom Gauld.

This is just a stupid little post to say that even though I had the most stressful morning- I made it to the visiting practitioners talk today, and managed to stay awake through the whole thing, even if I was sitting on the floor. No, seriously it was very interesting.
I always find it inspiring to talk to/listen to people who are out there 'living the dream'. Working and making and living. He seemed to have a great attitude and was down to earth. I enjoy his sophisticated sense of humour even if his work does kind of seem '10-year-old-boy-who-likes-to-draw-robots' (his words, not mine!). It's charming and simple and I should probably add in here that he doesn't seem afraid of using text within his work- which is obviously important when you draw comics... but the text is considered and fits perfectly. Plus, how can I not love someone who self publishes!?! Gave me a nice warm feeling to think about where I'll be in 5 years, 10 years...
Good talk. Looking forward to more like it (hopefully, I can be early and snag a chair!)
