Potato Prints :: My Prints!

Some of the prints we did today, we did on Sticker paper so we could use them as stickers for the back of the packets for our Manifesto. (Above was three separate prints, plain paper.)
We wanted to try different techniques of printing and as our characters are quite childish, we channeled our creatures and thought of the types of things they might do. Potato prints seemed an obvious and fun choice!

I'm really happy with these results, mine took a bit longer to make than some of the more simple ones, but I love how they really look like amoebas and the text 'Wise' and 'One' worked out well, I was a bit worried it might be too thin to print properly, but it's amazing what the ink picks up and doesn't. Just drawing into the potato with a knife affects the print. Definitely going to do this again at some point. Really like it. [:

You can see more of the prints our group made on the Group Blog, Amoibe.

Potato Prints :: The Making of...

This afternoon we gathered at my house (mainly because it's comfy and I have a rather large array of ink pads) to do a bunch of potato prints. Here are some in progress photos and some shots of the potatoes themselves.

Some of us had never done them before and it was really fun to try! Obviously some were more successful than others, but it was useful to have the time to figure out what worked better in the carving. I think we all channeled our inner kid, and reminisced about craft projects that we used to do when we were younger. It sounds silly, but I think that helped us get more accurate results (our creatures are childlike, young and naive).

The Giver Chapter 9

Re-listening to this book (which is written for young adults).
It's about a society with lots of rules and it is peaceful. The story follows a boy who is singled out at the Ceremony Of the 12s (or coming of age), when duties or roles are given out (jobs).
Appreciation of individual talents.
Roles given to individuals so they can serve their community best.
Precision of language.
Rituals- The telling of Dreams, Sharing Feelings.
Suppression of 'love/lust' (called Stirrings)
No doors in are ever locked.
Family Units. Dwellings. Sleeping Room. The book of Rules.

The language and words used to describe things may be helpful when writing our manifesto.

This chapter is quite a good one if you've never read it- it's right after he is given his special job.

KASPER HAUSER- WERNER HERZOG :: FILM/TV

The first Herzog film I think I've ever seen is: Even Dwarfs Started Small. They showed it during the Cinema Season last year(2010) during my Foundation at Camberwell. It was one of the films I enjoyed the least at the time. I think the shock factor of it being so radically different from what I would normally watch just threw me off- I remember saying to Peter 'this is soooo weird!' a dozen times during it. Luckily, we had a long conversation about it afterwards and saw one or two of his other films since then, and I have truely fallen for Herzog's directing. In fact, I would love to go back and watch the Dwarfs film again and see if my impression changes- I think I would appreciate the filming more.
I digress...

I found this film while I was researching Cuban Film Posters for our essay (seen above).
Peter came over (my film buddy) and we watched it tonight.

What captured me most was the story- a tragic but beautiful one- told in such a realistic manner. Kasper Hauser's peaceful, quiet, and trusting nature, the subtle but effective styling, the nearly-painful slow scenes, the interaction with animals, the impeccable ease that Herzog captures a life apart from societies normal 'rules', the beautiful german with subtitles, the tension slowly built up in places, the dream sequences, when he first sits at a table and every distraction is shown to us one by one and we feel overwhelmed like he would... plus the way this mans brain worked, the things he said. So wonderful.

"Why can't I play piano like I breathe?"
"The apple is tired. Let it rest... See it is smart. It jumped over your foot and ran away... Smart apple."

"It feels strong in my heart... The music feels strong in my heart... I feel so unexpectedly old..."

"It seems to me that my coming into this world was a very hard fall."

I also thought it might be relevent for our society we are making- he was not concerned with how things were meant to be- but wanted to learn and be and he found beauty in simple things (like the garden).

P.S. there were a few scenes where it looked like he was knitting or crocheting. made me smile.
This is one of those films that truly captures my attention. No crocheting allowed while watching it!

Hello Creature. :: Author Project!

Today I found a very interesting creature in the park. After getting to know it a bit better, it turns out we are very alike. It is quite shy and likes to lead a simple life, though the colours that it surrounds itself with, made me feel at ease. It is kind hearted and was willing to tell me a bit more about its life.It can stand up, but much prefers to sit down.  It's got a big hood to keep the sun out of it's eyes and protect itself from the wind. The hood also acts as a way to ward off predators, with it's complicated patterns. While it is resting and observing the world, it can make new additions to it's outer body. This one is still quite young, as you can see from the mostly white skin- but as it gets older and evolves, it will become more wise and have more stories that are told (in a language all to it's own) through the knitted patterns that will be attached as they are finished. You can already see one brown circular story. When it gets tired, it can change it's position so to rest its eyes. The hood also comes in handy here, making it possible to sleep at any time of day. You may notice that it's ball of wool has disappeared- it likes to store things inside it's outter shell/skin for safe keeping. As it grows older, it will become more nested into it's spot and probably fatter.I asked it if it can move around, and it demonstrated, with difficulty getting up into a standing position again. Although it is young, it moves slowly and like a frail old lady. Sometimes it even makes small noises of discomfort if pressured to move too fast. Luckily it is peaceful and most other beings that it interacts with are understanding and often come to it for advice or a snuggle.
(Alice was kind enough to take these photos for me today. [: Thanks! Edited by me.)

Costume in Progress! :: Author Project

This last week has been great- the Workshops with Rita and Marie have been incredibly helpful and illuminating! These are a few shots from Friday, of my costume in progress. Made a basic hood (first time ever!)And did more sewing on my body suit. These bottom photos are what I had finished when we all did our little 'presentations' to Joceline Howe at the end of the day.
"My creature can't move- it's immobilized by the restrictive sack of skin it lives in and tends to like to sit or ly down in it's environment. While it's there it can do some crafts (**this got quite a few laughs, as I took out my knitting dramatically from inside the sack**), to keep itself busy. It keeps a small supply of yarn and things inside it's skin, and can take it out to work on it when it feels like it. When an object is complete, it can attach the object to the sack to make it's home more like a nest. Overtime, it will become more comfortable and more 'nested' in." That's basically what I said, along with my primary needs being: Crafts as 'magic' or therapy (That's how it feeds or nurtures itself.), Comfort (building the next), Honesty (and humility, and trust- all handmade), Colour (the materials) and Senses (arm holes, a hood for seeing).

Here is a little photo of my workspace from friday. (Big ass thermos full of tea- much needed!)

THE PRISONER :: FILM/TV

I came across this show while browsing LoveFilm for some free things to watch. They have quite a great selection of of old films/tv shows.
Beyond it's hilarious serious nature and the james-bond tendencies, it has great style, great filming, and a pretty interesting plot.

Today, I mainly wanted to point out the wardrobe styling. Those capes keep popping back into my mind when I think about my costume project. The colours, then uniformity, the simplicity and the rounded shape.

Apparently this place is a real place in wales???? I need to go there. Need!

And because I can't not say it:
INFORMATION!
INFORMATION!
INFORMATION!
BY HOOK OR BY CROOK WE WILL!
I AM NUMBER TWO.
YOU ARE NUMBER SIX.
I AM NOT A NUMBER! I AM A FREE MAN!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

Author Project!

Hello! I've been a bit quiet- been a bit tired and fighting that feeling of losing 'myself' again now that we've started back at college. It's really amazing being around such talented natural illustrators but it makes me feel a little sad too. I don't know- maybe it's just the fact that I don't draw as much or as easily as they do. Maybe it's that I'm more of a natural crafter? Maybe it's just that I get nervous drawing/making in public and my nervousness clouds my thinking which is annoying. Maybe it's just that I've got lower energy levels and my friends on this course are motivated and actually use their time productively? It's actually really inspiring. But I guess I just hate feeling left behind. I don't know if that's the right way to say it- I just don't like having to sit at home on a day like today (getting work done) but not having the energy to actually go into college or stand up for more than 5 min. It's a bit of a downer.

BUT good things areeeee that I have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing for this project. Wooooo! AND Jazz, Dave and I did some tie-dying yesterday! It's been on my list of things to try for years and years! Super silliously addicted now. Just bought some dye off ebay and plan on basically tie-dying my entire life (ok, that's an exaggeration). haha. But it's really awesome. Pictures of what we did when they are dry!

I thought about making this post, a VLog- talking about the project as if I was presenting my ideas to the class (in the Workshop on Tues I found it incredibly helpful to hear what other people's ideas were, and just talking through it seemed to solidify ideas)- BUT then I couldn't sleep last night and ended up sketching out all that I wanted to say- so I'll just show you that instead. [:

(p.s. i'm sorry about the really shoody pictures. just quick and easy today)

I realize it probably makes little to no sense because I haven't explained my original idea- that will come. I kind of just want to get on and start making!!!
