March 2012- Home Movies.

This is something I've been wanting to do for a while now- I used to take lots of stopframe photos of my life, with the intention of compiling them into a video format- a sort of moving image of my life at that time. But it never got done.
With my new camera, it's a whole lot easier to record moments in this way, and I found myself taking more video than photographs! Which is quite exciting really. [: I'm calling this a 'Home Movie' because- in way, I guess, it is. It's got a very sentimental quality to it. Sort of half documentary, half home video. You'll also see clips of vlogs in here that I've tried making. haha. Enjoy:

** This is in HD- so that means to see it's full beauty you want to FULL SCREEN this bad boy (and make sure the little 'HD' button is in blue- bottom right)**

and some screen grabs:Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.26.26Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.27.48Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.28.14Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.28.24Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.29.01Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.31.02Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.31.06Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.31.57Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.32.28Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.32.36Screen shot 2012-05-01 at 03.32.48All footage taken in the month of March 2012. Video Question exchange.- vlogging

To help motivate me to incorporate Vlogging into my blogging schedule- I e-mailed a blogger friend, who also vlogs, and we are doing a little back-and-forth question answering/asking! That's her blog- Love,Elycia. Go there to see her response! and here is my first video:

Great for loosening up and I got a real chance to practice with artificial light & setting up a nice clean background shot.
Also the more I edit HD, the more comfortable I get!!!
Filmed and edited in one evening.

Jazz and Kim VLOG

New camera! To test it out, Jazz and I made a silly vlog for ArtEqualsHappy.

Not quite figured out the export right. HD is confusing me.
And also my tripod skills need some improvement (cutoff my head at the end. yup. that happened.)

"Summer 2011" Colourwork patterns :: Sketchbooks/Knitting

Hello. [: Like most people who do creative things, I keep a notebook- one I carry around with me everywhere. They tend to last me a season, depending on how big it is, and what else I'm working on. In the Summer of 2011 there was a lot of product designing for Renegade, to-do-lists, blogging lists, notes from galleries and films, and colourwork pattern designing.This notebook has squared paper in it. It's A4, so the perfect book to doodle and work out patterns for new knitting experiments. Drawing on a grid is something that I love to do. I got this book out in all kinds of places to quickly jot down shapes and patterns I was thinking of. Here are some peeks from those times... (You might even recognise some patterns that become more finished things!)

Blackheath Christmas Market! :: Fundrasing.

This year, at college I was lucky enough to be involved in Two christmas markets! One was in the afternoon, in the 3rd year Illustration studio and was organised by them. It was nice with the smell of mulled wine and chai, and paper chains all over the studio. The lovely lady who organised it was super sweet and they made me feel at home (even though I was a second year. haha).

Then, at 4:30- it was off to Blackheath to participate in our year's market. It was our first fundraiser for our final show and went pretty well! A lot of the class had tables- some selling cakes or christmas cards or prints or cute badges, and some with vintage or homemade chutney! Yum! There was also cute workshops for kids! Blackheath is a sweet little town and we loved being there. My camera battery died earlier so most of these photos are from people on facebook (thank you!).Jazz and I had stalls next to eachother. Obviously. [:
I wore my festive elf hat, and had yummy Pecan Tarts.
Saara and Alice made delishious chutney. And Ali was rushing around organising everything. Amazing!
Jazz's table looked great! She's been doing a lot of lino-cut prints in her bedroom, and painting ceramics! Those christmas pudding cards are my favourite. [:
And Ame selling her christmas cards on Etsy! Some of them are Letterpressed (see below) and others are handmade. She's pretty clever.
Yay! Friends and Crafts and Merriment all in one place. It was a perfect (admittetly busy) day. kxo

Knit bluesock01Having made several pairs of sucsessful simple socks, I attempted a rather long, complicated Gentleman's Sock from a book on Vintage Socks. The pattern was taken from an old Victorian style sock and were made on teeny tiny needles (2.5mm) that are still bigger than what the ladies back then used to use.Knit bluesock02I started off well. The rib is quite perfect, in a plain colour and even and stretchy enough to get a foot through.Knit bluesock03Then I started in on the main body, and decided to use a colourwork pattern I had made and swatched up beforehand.Knit bluesock04Of course- being quite new to colourwork, (not yet mastered the art of 'two-finger knitting') I didn't think to add in extra space for the stranding, and so this sock is much much too narrow to get a foot in and much too big to be for someone smaller. Still, I continued with the different heel and funny toe (adding in the colourwork, to add strength and fun spot). This was certainly a test in patience and quick fingers and after making this, I have a whole new understanding of what 'traditional knitting' is like. I (unfortunately?) fell in love with the small needles, and can now do this colourwork pattern with my eyes closed. Knit bluesock05Knit bluesock06Although it's not very practical, I am very glad I've finished this little gem of a piece, because if it stayed in my bag forever unfinished, I'd never feel like I could move past and forward from here. It is a very odd shape, and can be twisted and folded and placed to make a variety of make-believe animals (haha!).

I would love to do another sock like this (a new pair) and see if I could do it properly.
Kimxo
p.s. Did you know they used to have a 'seam stitch' at the back of socks, that would be a purl and marked the begining of the round? Like stockings. So charming!

Wrist Warmers :: Knitting

Knit warmer01These cozy and slightly lopsided wrist warmers started out as socks for a friend. I was experimenting with a new size wool and needles and some button holes to string ribbion through... Basically I didn't swatch it or do my calculations right and they were too tight when I tried to get it over my heel. With a quick change, I finished them off straight & left a hole for my thumb and... wa la! Knit warmer03Knit warmer04Because of the stranding on the back(see below), (this was before I learnt how to do colourwork with both right and left hand) they are super thick and snug- perfect for drawing! I think I finished these in the springtime sometime. I still need to make that pair of socks for my friend...Knit warmer05It's so nice to see my drawings go from scribbles, to swatches, into a garment or frame. I needed to remind myself today that mistakes are ok, and not every part of the process is going to be perfect.

Kimxo.
p.s. I've got more funny knitting adventures to share with you. Things that have gone right and wrong! Hopefully you can sympathise. haha. [:

Misc events/exhibitions. :: Unit 6.

Textiles In Sussex- a big hall full of experienced weavers and spinners. Some exhibitions, some traders stalls and some very friendly and helpful ladies who taught me several different ways of weaving! Amazing. (more photos in my FACT project sketchbook).

Also- Read my Renegade Craft Fair adventures here.
You may have to scroll down quite a bit to see some of the photos of the actual event. I had a stall there & it was a pretty big deal, that I planned for about 6 months. Because I was a vendor, I didn't have much time to look around- let alone take notes- but there are a lot of photos of my booth and my experience at that link.

Below is a page of notes and also a scan of the little 'goodie bag' or 'make your own' kit I got when I went to a Craftivist meeting. About how to combine crafts and activism. Really sparked my interest. Met the lady who started the London group and we had a good time chatting about issues and how she started it and what it's all about. A really good cause I could get behind. About raising awareness without being aggressive or telling people what to do. I stitched a little banner (in the scan of the kit 'Love is the Answer'). Oct or Nov.

Since Nov 2011, a few girls and myself have been meeting every wednesday night for 'Camberwell Craft Club'. Below are some notes on our 'ethos' and ideas if we ever wanted to make it a bigger deal.

The Power Of Making at the V&A (and part of my notes from the Fairy Tales lecture).
