The Doodle Book.

Over the summer, as an attempt to bring a routine into my life- I've started what I call 'Doodle Time' right before I go to sleep. The idea is to just go crazy over a double page and use as many colours and childish materials as possible. I didn't want any real rules and I didn't want it to be stiff or feel like I had to draw in a certain way.

Sometimes it goes really well. And sometimes I don't really like the results or I'm having a gross day:

But most of the time the results are interesting...
At first I tried not using text so much in them but it comes too second nature to me, so they kind of mainly end up with a quote.

Using the crayon as a solid 'shadow' but in different colours really interested me. I've been drawing from screen shots of t.v. shows and movies that I've been watching (can you see a True Blood obsession?? haha)- and drawing people and faces is my biggest insecurity about doing an illustration course. I'm not confident at all with my drawing skills- so I keep practising. I find it easier to draw faces from photographs. And seeing as I love taking photos- maybe that will just become part of my process. Anyway...

I think more of this... what do you think?

p.s. I always used to have a set of markers and paper with me when I was a kid. I remember using the backs of print outs that my dad didn't need anymore (he's a computer programer haha- do you remember those holes in the perforated edges?). My favourite thing to do was line up my markers in rainbow order and draw patterns. It feels really good to be channeling this 5-9 year old kim.

  2. These are really neat! I love your use of color!!
I tend to use words/phrases/quotes in most of my doodles, too. :)
    Great job!

  3. These would look fantastic as digital art. They'd make great backgrounds or pixel art.
(I've been looking around at these Camberwell student blogs all day and I noticed you from the enrolment! :D)
