Notes in Lectures :: Unit 5

Last week, I shared with you some of my doodles of colourwork designs and patterns in my Summer 2011 notebook. In this notebook of mine, I also had a lot of doodles during lectures or talks that I went to. I have a nasty habit of drawing what people are wearing next to me (see the roses two pages down) or the room I'm in, or the lecturer. haha. They are mind triggers, and help me remember being there. Also, I'm a big believer in taking notes! I find I remember things better if I write them down. So anything that is relevant to me- key words, favourite phrases, and thoughts while I'm listening to a talk all go down in note-form. (Often accompained by arrows or boxes or other doodles!)Yup- I'm that girl at the front, jotting down notes like a regular Hermione! No shame in that!! :]

These Monday lectures. :: lectures.

These Monday lectures are really giving me a lot to think about.
things that I knew already but never really considered to be a threatening problem.
Having the problems of our society pointed out so plainly.

All the books I've been reading/listening to about a fictitious dystopian society in the future. They all feel much more real and urgent.
Scares me a little.
Excites me a little.
Makes me feel like we (creatives) have the power to change it all, even in a small way.
I sort of feel speechless.
And yet there are a thousand things I want everyone to know.

Signs Of Revolt was really good today.
Also went to a Craftivists workshop on sunday which was great.
Non threatening messages for a better society.
Wake people up.

Change my personal daily goings on. Recognize of all the things I already do.

So much going on in my head right now.

Tom Gauld.

This is just a stupid little post to say that even though I had the most stressful morning- I made it to the visiting practitioners talk today, and managed to stay awake through the whole thing, even if I was sitting on the floor. No, seriously it was very interesting.
I always find it inspiring to talk to/listen to people who are out there 'living the dream'. Working and making and living. He seemed to have a great attitude and was down to earth. I enjoy his sophisticated sense of humour even if his work does kind of seem '10-year-old-boy-who-likes-to-draw-robots' (his words, not mine!). It's charming and simple and I should probably add in here that he doesn't seem afraid of using text within his work- which is obviously important when you draw comics... but the text is considered and fits perfectly. Plus, how can I not love someone who self publishes!?! Gave me a nice warm feeling to think about where I'll be in 5 years, 10 years...
Good talk. Looking forward to more like it (hopefully, I can be early and snag a chair!)
